How to keep your pants up without a belt

Oct 20

If you find yourself with a broken belt - or if you simply don't wish to wear one - there are several ways to keep your pants up without using a belt. You'll be surprised how many of these tips you've used before, but didn't realize they weren't employing belts.

Be creative! Don't limit yourself to the following suggestions.

Tie your shirt around your waist

If you're wearing a long-sleeved dress shirt or sweater, this is an easy way to keep your pants up without using a belt. Simply lift the hem of your dress shirt above the top of your pants and then tie it around your waist. Be sure that the knot is at your front, so you can tie and untie it quickly as necessary.

If you need to go outside during a snowstorm or frigid weather, be sure to put on a coat over the dress shirt. Don't let the cold air hit your bare torso!

Suspenders

Not just for old fogies, suspenders are a great choice for keeping your pants up without using a belt if you have some on hand. Wear suspenders even if you don't need to hold up any other clothing -- they're great for adding style points to an outfit, and can be worn with just about anything.

For added convenience, consider buying adjustable suspenders that adjust at the clasp. No need to add more holes in your belt loops by using a belt!

Tie the drawstring together

If you happen to be wearing sweatpants, jeans or loose-fitting pants, you can tie the drawstrings together and use them as a makeshift belt to hold up your pants. Simply pull both strings through one of the front belt loops and then tie a knot just below your navel to keep your pants from falling down.

Use a belt extender

If you have a belt that's too big for you, wearing it with a belt extender can help hold up your pants without using a belt. There are several different types of belt extenders, so choose one that will be most comfortable for you.
